My Son Suffers School Anxiety

Posted by Cecile at 8/27/2010 02:13:00 PM 0 comments
At last the first week of school is over. It was a stressful week for me and my son. With the move to a new house, accompanied a new school, new teacher and new classmates for my son. For a six year old, this is an adjustment that is hard for him to bear. And so he was so scared to go to school and every morning was a struggle. He cried, clinged, made me promise to picked him up after school, sleepless night and tummy ached. I was so worried for him. I am glad that he did better today that yesterday. He said he had fun and is liking the school now. Anyway, as a mother who is worry sicked for his child who is suffering from anxiety, I did a lot of research on school anxiety and what we can do to help our son overcome it. In one article, I found peace knowing that this thing happens and is very normal. Within two weeks, he would be able to be back to his old self again. I also read about malignant Mesothelioma which is very common for those people who work at the construction sites, roads, and companies that manufacture or use asbestos. It is very sad to know that most of the affected workers are poor and couldn't afford to pay for hospital bills and even other medical expenses. I hope that the government will do something about this problem.

Iron Man Costume for my Son

After our trip to Toyota service center yesterday for oil change, we went to Costco nearby before going home. We didn't want to go back there again so we used up the credit we have there and bought ourselves a new digital camera. I know, we just bought a new one a year ago, but I dropped and broke it during Jacob's "field day" at school. I hate that because of accident that day, it cost us our new camera. I hope this new camera would last longer than one year or more before it needs a replacement. While at Costco, I also checked out their kids clothes section to see if they already have kids costumes I can look for my son's Halloween costumes this year. They do have some, but unfortunately, they don't have an Iron Man costume for my son. My poor little guy was very disappointed :-(; and was sad. I told him that we will look for one somewhere and assured him that we will find it and have it for Halloween. Then, he smiled and said 'okay, Mommy.'

Bitter Gourd for Anemia

Do you know that the tropical vegetable called bitter melon/gourd is good for anemia and blood sugar control? Yup, and I have been eating it at least once a day. At Asian store you can even find bitter gourd tea if you are tired of the meat itself. The leaves of bitter gourd can be put to your sauteed mung bean and it is good, too. This is one common medicinal food for diabetics.

According to Wikipedia:

In the Philippines, where it is known as ampalayĆ”, bitter melon is used in many dishes. It may be stir-fried with ground beef and oyster sauce, or with eggs and diced tomato. A very popular dish from the Ilocos region in the north of Luzon island is pinakbet, which consists mainly of bitter melons, eggplant, okra, string beans, tomatoes, lima beans, and other various regional vegetables altogether stewed with a little bagoong- based stock. The young shoots and leaves of the bitter melon may also be eaten as greens; these are locally called dahon ng ampalayĆ” (lit. "leaf of bitter melon").

Bitter melon contains a lectin that has insulin-like activity. The insulin-like bioactivity of this lectin is due to its linking together 2 insulin receptors. This lectin lowers blood glucose concentrations by acting on peripheral tissues and, similar to insulin's effects in the brain, suppressing appetite. This lectin is likely a major contributor to the hypoglycemic effect that develops after eating bitter melon and why it may be a way of managing adult-onset diabetes. Lectin binding is non-protein specific, and this is likely why bitter melon has been credited with immunostimulatory activity—by linking receptors that modulate the immune system, thereby stimulating said receptors.

Having Fun with Friends

Yesterday, we got the chance to see the movie : Despicable Me with a friend and her son :-); Jake and Charles had a blast! It was a funny movie and we adults liked it, too. Jacob has been bugging me to see this movie for like two weeks and finally, yesterday his hard work paid :-). After the movie, we went to a friend's house and have a long chatted while eating some of the pulled pork sandwich while hubby watched movie on the TV and the boys were playing. We all have a great day. Marivic works at school and she would be back at work next week. Good thing we had a chance to get together and have fun. Anyway, we like her and her family because we get along so well...and have so much things in common and so as our boys. Next year if God permits, we plan on going to Disney World after the schools ends. That is going to be a big expenses so we need to save now if we are to go there. We haven't mention this plan with the boys yet...otherwise they would start bugging us :-). Before we ended the day, we went to get my prescription medicine at Walgreens and then went grocery shopping afterward. I also bought myself and Jake custom water bottles we can use when we go walking or riding our bikes in the morning for an exercise. Whew, it is so hot outside and we need to drink plenty of water to keep ourselves hydrated. Taking about water, I started collecting urine for my lab test to morrow. I hope the tests would turned out to be alright so I don't need to worry about it.
