Food for Thought

A recent study of over two thousand adults over age sixty-five found that what you eat could impact your chances of getting Alzheimer’s disease. The diet that provided the most benefits was a Mediterranean-style diet, which differs from typical American fare in that it is high in fish, vegetables, and legumes and low in red meant and poultry. Those study participants that followed a healthy, Mediterranean diet were about 40 percent less likely to experience cognitive decline than their less-healthy counterparts. Researchers suggest that being in the habit of eating healthy long before Alzheimer’s or dementia is likely to be a key factor in preventing cognitive impairment.
